Mont Saint-Michel, a French national monument, is a small tidal island off the coast of Normandy, connected to the mainland by a mile-long causeway. The islet is dominated by a former Benedictine abbey and fortress dating from the thirteenth century. An old church tops the summit, and at the base is a small village of houses and shops. For the tourist, the ascent to the top begins in a network of stairways and sidestreets.
